Empowering Educators to Realise Home Ownership Dreams
Kapunda High School maths/science teacher Michael Raschella knows how tough it can be trying to get into the property market as a first home buyer on a single income.
Getting into as home located near where you work can be tricky, too.
Which is why Villawood’s Care Worker Support program has been very handy in helping him secure his financial future with his own home.
The $10K savings the program provides helped offset rising cost of living, fuel prices and other expenses throwing up obstacles to him achieving the great Aussie dream of home ownership.
“The care worker rebate of $10,000 was a huge bonus that has helped make my dream of owning a home reality,” Michael says.
“It also means that I have flexibility when it comes to having a bit of bonus allowance to spend on house upgrades if needed. It’s a rebate that I’m extremely grateful for and without who knows if I’d ever be a home-owner.”
Michael started full-time work in 2020 after five years of university study. Single income meant his borrowing power was low, not enough to become a home owner.
When he saw a William Lakes allotment come up, he jumped at the chance and purchased, knowing that a new enterprise agreement for education employees was going to be approved.
“That meant my borrowing power would increase and I’d have time to save in order to become to a home-owner,” he says.
“William Lakes is close to where I work and my family, and through the partnership that Villawood have developed with Kapunda High School I thought that it would be a fantastic community to be a part of.
“If I hadn’t purchased land at William Lakes, I’d be living at home with my family forever, just watching all my friends and colleagues move out.”
