Two major Melbourne housing estates to support essential workers.
Villawood’s Redstone estate will roll out the red carpet to care workers with discount prices.
Villawood Properties boss Rory Costelloe, the son of a police officer and a teacher, has added the Redstone development in Sunbury to his firm’s list of Victorian estates where careworkers get a $20,000 discount.
The first 10 public blocks in the estate go on sale today, with buyers able to make a purchase online without leaving their lounge room.
“I came from a careworker family and this just brings community minded people to an estate,” Mr Costelloe said.
“The unexpected effect of this is you get streets full of teachers, fireys and nurses and that means you have a very caring street, because they are very caring people.”
The estate will feature a lavish residents’ club.
Another unexpected benefit was it might be helping to insulate the property market from the economic crisis unfolding as a result of efforts to fight COVID-19.
Urban Development Institute of Australia Victorian chief executive Danni Hunter said while essential workers were ordinarily viewed with “great importance” by developers, they were particularly important now.
“Their jobs are probably the most secure in our society right now, and rightfully so,” Ms Hunter said.
“It makes sense for industry to think about how to deliver more housing that specifically meets the needs of our essential workers.”
