A home you can feel good about

The building industry is coming together to help vulnerable South Australians, writes Tom Bowden It might be known as the “Good Home”, but for SA’s sick and underprivileged children, it’s a very, very good home indeed.

Construction on The Advertiser Foundation’s Good Home house and land auction property at Oakden Rise is well under way, with the external structure all in place and the scaffolding removed.

On track with for completion in July or August, and set to be auctioned later this year, the entire final sale price will be shared evenly by six kids organisations the Childhood Cancer Association, Backpacks 4 SA Kids, KickStart for Kids, the Sammy D Foundation, the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation’s family support program and another still to be determined.

Built by the team at Villawood Properties and Weeks Homes, and with donated materials and labour by a number of local companies, including Heidelberg Materials, CSR, and Eco Walling Systems, the home will make a positive change in the lives of young South Australians.

Weeks Homes chief executive officer Peter McIndoe, pictured above, said he was thrilled to be involved with the project.

“It’s exciting to see the Good Home is now really taking shape,” he said. “This project would not be possible without the generous support of our suppliers who are donating materials and labour. There’s been such great support from community-minded Adelaide companies.”

Villawood Properties General Manager for SA Stuart Headland said Villawood prided itself on building close ties with the community.

“Our Villawood Foundation actively seeks to build those ties everywhere, especially where they’re most needed,” Mr Headland said.

“The Advertiser Foundation’s Kids Appeal is very focused on helping where it’s most effective. Kids are especially vulnerable so it’s reassuring to know the proceeds will be seriously helping to improve their lives.” Mr Headland said the auction day will be special.

“We know the successful bidder will not only be getting a great new home,” he said.

“We know they’ll also get a great feeling, realising the money they pay for the home is going to a truly valuable purpose assisting South Australian kids at risk or in need.”

Rachael Zaltron, from Backpacks for SA Kids, which provides clothing and other essentials to children leaving family violence said the project would greatly assist South Australia’s most vulnerable.

“It’s really important for our kids to know that people are coming together to do things for them,” she said. “It’s important for our kids to be seen and for them to understand that someone believes in them. It gives them the ability to reach their full potential.”

When complete, the modern family home will feature three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and contemporary open-plan living.
