One for the kids, in so many ways

By Tom Bowden

The celebrations will be in full swing at Oakden today when The Advertiser Foundation’s no reserve Good Home hits the auction block.

The brand new, fully-furnished move-in ready Japandi-style property at 24 Bluegum Way, Oakden will be auctioned today at 11am, with the entire proceeds of its sale to be shared among six SA children’s charities.

Among them is Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation together with Raising Literacy Australia, with the foundation’s Ali Valentine saying the funds will greatly benefit those in our community who need it most.

“Thanks to the generosity of the South Australian businesses supporting the Good Home auction – we are able to support a project which will harness research to create a really positive and immediate impact for children and families,” she said.

“The vision for this project is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed in their early years.”

Among these is little Willow Lee-Pollock, five months, who received a reading pack shortly after her birth. “We love that the books are Australian with themes around community, nature and relationships,” her mother Lindsey Pollock said.

“I think it’s so important to read to your baby, even when they’re tiny. “They might not understand everything yet, but Willow loves to hear my voice and look at the pictures.

“It’s such a lovely way to connect.”

The house and land for the Good Home have been donated by Weeks Homes and Villawood Properties, with the entire sale price of the fully furnished home to be shared evenly among the Childhood Cancer Association, KickStart for Kids, the Sammy D Foundation, Backpacks 4 SA Kids, the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation’s family support program, and Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation with Raising Literacy Australia.

To celebrate the auction and grand opening of Oakden Rise’s display village, Villawood is hosting a free family fun day today from 10am to 3pm.

Come along and enjoy free food, show rides, mini golf, a petting zoo, live music, face painting, a Blue Brick Road scavenger hunt and more.

The event will be held at the corner of Fosters and Grand Junction Rds, Oakden.

Deputy chair of The Advertiser Foundation Kids Appeal, Penny Fowler, said she was thrilled to see Villawood getting behind the project, after supporting similar fundraising efforts interstate.

“It’s inspiring to see Villawood now bringing this same spirit of giving to South Australia with The Good Home supporting the SA Kids Appeal,” she said.

“This project is about more than building a house – it’s about building hope and creating brighter futures for our children and their families.”
