Building on Slope – Brad Cockerell

Brad and Tayla moved into their brand-new home at Wandana Heights in February 2021. They love their new home especially the balcony with its amazing views that delight them everyday and gives them an impressive entertaining place. Building on a slope has created a home that has so much more to offer than they could ever have imagined.

For some time, Brad and Tayla had been thinking about building a family home. They considered a few locations, particularly looking for a great area that could offer them so much now and into the future.

When they discovered Wandana Heights, they were very taken with the size of the blocks compared to many other estates. The blocks were large and elevated with fantastic views over the You Yang’s, Corio Bay and all the way to Torquay. Everything about Wandana was perfect but they did have a few concerns about building on a slope. They weren’t sure how to go about finding a builder who could build elevated homes and also wondered about the amount of work that may go into such a construction.

Brad and Tayla’s display village builder went above and beyond by fully customising their plans to suit them and equally importantly, they did so in a cost-effective manner.

Once they had confidence in their builder, what really made them feel super comfortable was the great architect selected for them. The architect understood what they hoped for and had the necessary plans and ideas to maximise their land so it could deliver their dream home.

The design stage took a few months as Brad and Tayla went back and forth with the builder and architect working out how best to maximise the block’s potential to build their preferred design. They also had several conversations about how to reduce site and build costs.

The time spent at this early stage paid off because they were able to include some unique design features that have added so much to the character of their home. Brad and Tayla decided to go reverse living because the site had uninterrupted views to the front. They now have views of Geelong and the water from their lounge room and kitchen. They were also able to put in a large balcony with so much room for entertaining a crowd. Their backyard has a 2-tier level with an alfresco area on the lower tier and a pool resplendent on the top tier. There is even enough room for a large patch of grass for kids to play on as well.

Brad and Tayla would recommend building on a slope. They never thought their home would have so many stunning features. By taking the time to do their research and working with a good builder with the right vision they were able to create a truly impressive place to live and enjoy all the advantages of an elevated position.
