BROWNHILL LOOKOUT CLEAN-UP

Wandana’s historic Brownhill Lookout is looking a lot tidier thanks to Tyrone Te Haara and Adrian Hau.

The Taiamai Group contractors took time out from their normal maintenance work at Villawood’s rapidly-growing Wandana to give the public landmark an overdue scrub and polish.

The Brownhill Lookout adjoins Drewan Park, presently undergoing an $800K facelift as part of the new Wandana’s community facilities.

The lookout dates back to 1908 when the Geelong Progress Association built a wooden lookout at “for the purpose of affording visitors a splendid panoramic view of the town and its environs”. The area was called Panorama Heights, Ceres at the time.

The old wooden structure had disappeared by the 1950s, prompting historian and Geelong Advertiser editor Walter Brownhill to donate the current concrete structure. His father, as president of the Progress Association, had been largely responsible for the original.

The Brownhills, including George Brownhill, also an Advertiser editor, have been remembered in the naming of Brownhill Drive in the new Wandana estate.
