Accidentally ARMSTRONG
Nine News reporter Chris Kohler talks recently with Hyun and Ken on Armstrong’s attributes.
You’ll go a long way to find people more enthusiastic about joining the Villawood family than Armstrong downsizers Hyun Anderson and Ken Jewell.
They moved from Bentleigh to Mount Duneed three months ago and have embraced all things Armstrong: the parks and trails, the ancient redgums, wetlands, creek, residents’ club, the café … the lot.
“We wake up each morning and say, ‘What will we do today?” says Ken, with an enthusiasm worthy of someone decades his junior. Hyun is equally immersed in the community, its residents, locality, history, wildlife …
“We weren’t looking to come here, it was kind of accidental,” she says. “We were looking around the Bellarine, around Ocean Grove, Clifton Springs, Portarlington.”
Hyun is a retired Qantas cabin crew supervisor who’s travelled the world with the carrier. She speaks English, Korean, Japanese, German and Spanish and works these days as an interpreter. Ken is a retired cabinet-maker/craftsmen who wanted to move closer to the surf.
The couple say their Armstrong home has been valued at several hundred thousand dollars more than they paid three months ago but they have no intention of even considering selling.
“Over my dead body!” laughs Hyun.
