Sunbury Road Upgrade major construction to begin

The Sunbury Road Upgrade is another step closer with major construction set to start in May.

From late April you’ll start to see temporary safety traffic barriers being placed along Sunbury Road between Bulla-Diggers Rest Road and Shepherds Lane. We’ll move to the northern end of the project later in the year.

What’s happening

Over four nights in late April, we’ll work to install traffic barriers and complete temporary line marking between Shepherds Lane and the Bulla-Diggers Rest Road roundabout to prepare for the start of major construction.

We’ll leave one lane in each direction open for motorists, while we construct new lanes safely behind these barriers.

Once we have set up, we’ll work behind barriers between 7am to 6pm, Mondays to Fridays and at times, between 7am to 5pm on Saturdays.

Where we’re working on other sections of Sunbury Road not supported by traffic barriers, we’ll generally work between 9.30am and 3.30pm on weekdays to avoid impacting traffic during peak times to minimise disruption to road users. When we need to do further work at night, we’ll let you know in advance.

Construction activities

To support the start of major construction we will:

  • install temporary traffic barriers to allow traffic to flow while creating a safe environment for our team to work
  • put in place important environmental protection zones and controls
  • carefully remove trees and other vegetation with expert advice from an arborist and on-the-ground support from an ecologist
  • identify, protect and relocate essential utility services such as gas, electricity, communications and water
  • carry out earthworks to prepare the site to lay the foundation for the two new traffic lanes

To find out what we’ve been up to and what works are coming up, read the latest project update on our website.

What this means for you

As we build around three kilometres of new roadway on Sunbury Road between the Bulla-Diggers Rest Road roundabout and Shepherds Lane over the coming months, you will experience:

  • lane closures and speed reductions to allow for work to be carried out safely
  • some noise from equipment and heavy machinery such as excavators and trucks
  • possible vibration and dust which we’ll closely monitor to ensure they’re kept to a minimum

Please observe speed reduction signage, follow the directions of our traffic controllers and obey any temporary traffic changes in the interests of your safety and our team working on-site.

We’ll work hard to maintain access to homes and businesses at all times. If access needs to be temporarily restricted, we’ll be in contact with you to discuss these plans.

If you have any concerns about the potential impacts from these works, please contact us to discuss how we can help.

Other works along Sunbury Road

We’re working closely with other Big Build projects and businesses operating in the area to coordinate activities and minimise disruptions wherever possible.

We recognise that there are a number of new residential and commercial sites in development along Sunbury Road and Lancefield Road. Some of these developers are also working on sections of Sunbury Road independent of the Sunbury Road Upgrade project to build new entrances and install new underground utility services.

These works are being supported by traffic barriers and speed reductions to enable their activities to be completed safely. We’ll continue to work closely with these developers to minimise the impact to traffic flow where possible with safety being our highest priority.
