Barefoot in the Grass

Barefoot in the Grass commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the first Sunbury Music Festival.

The Sunbury Music Festivals staged between 1972 – 1975 are an important part of the cultural memory of Sunbury. They drew thousands of people to the area and featured some of the most significant acts of the 1970’s including local acts Madder Lake, Skyhooks, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, and Renee Geyer and drawing Deep Purple and Queen from the United Kingdom.

The exhibition highlights the significance of the Festivals and their contribution to Australian music history and culture from a range of local and historical perspectives. It includes images and memorabilia drawn from Hume City Council’s George Evans Museum and Civic collections, The Arts Centre Performing Arts Collection alongside input from music historians and stories from local community members.

The exhibition aims to give an overview of the legacy and influence of the festival while acknowledging how individuals from the community who collect and collate its stories become valuable archivists of social history.

Exhibition launch: Saturday 29 January, 2pm – 3.30pm. Registrations are essential, book your spot by Thursday 27 January 2022
