Both the State and Federal Governments are both running initiatives aimed at helping First Home Buyers get into the property market.
The First Home Owners Grant is an initiative run through the State Government that first time homebuyers can apply for when buying or building a new home valued up to $750,000. First home buyers in Metropolitan Melbourne are eligible to a grant of $10,000 while those in regional Victoria (including Geelong and Bendigo) are eligible for up to $20,000.
In addition to the First Home Owners Grant, the Federal Government has announced its First Home Loan Deposit Scheme, which will allow eligible first home buyers to purchase a home with a deposit of as little as 5 per cent. The scheme will be available to first home buyers applying for owner-occupied loans on a principal and interest basis, who are on an income of up to $125,000 per annum for singles and up to $200,000 per annum combined for couples.
There is a price cap on eligible properties, which is calculated based on location. For Melbourne metro and regional centres across Victoria – i.e. Geelong – the price cap is $600,000.
The scheme commences 1 January 2020 and will support up to 10,000 loans each financial year.
